FUNCTIONAL LANGUAGE
Lesson Description
What is this lesson about? This small talk ESL lesson plan is designed for A2–B1 learners who want to feel more confident starting and maintaining everyday conversations. It introduces practical small talk phrases for greetings, asking questions, sharing brief opinions, and closing conversations politely. What language will students learn? Students focus on functional, real-world English expressions such as:
Openings: Hi! How’s your week going?
Questions: Have you ever…? / Where did you go?
Sharing experiences: I tried a new healthy recipe.
Closings: It was nice talking about this. Let’s chat again soon.
How do students practise? The lesson follows a clear, supportive sequence:
Warm-up discussion questions to ease into conversation.
Dialogue activity to highlight useful small talk phrases.
Gap-fill practice to reinforce key expressions in context.
Role-play speaking practice where students initiate, respond, and close conversations.
Personal reflection to encourage learners to apply the phrases in real life.
Why is this lesson useful? By the end of the lesson, learners will be able to:
Start conversations naturally in both social and classroom settings.
Keep small talk going by asking follow-up questions and sharing brief experiences.
Close conversations politely, leaving a good impression.
Build confidence in speaking English outside of formal study.
What makes this small talk ESL lesson plan unique?
It focuses on authentic, practical communication rather than abstract grammar drills. Students practise exactly the kind of short, informal conversations they need in daily life, workplace interactions, and wellbeing-focused learning environments.
Who is it for? This lesson is ideal for adult learners at A2–B1 level who want to improve fluency in everyday situations. It’s particularly suited for online classes, workplace English, or anyone who struggles with the confidence to make small talk in English.
