Lesson Description

What is this lesson about? This hopes, wishes and intentions ESL lesson plan teaches A2–B1 learners how to talk about future goals, desires, and intentions with clarity and confidence. Students learn to share personal ambitions, respond supportively, and distinguish between words like hope, wish, intend, and plan.

What language will students learn? The lesson introduces six essential vocabulary items: hope, wish, intend, plan, schedule, ambitious. Students practise recognising their meanings, using them in dialogues, and expressing themselves through both controlled and freer practice.

How do students practise? The lesson flows step by step:

  • Warm-up discussion questions about personal goals and desires.

  • Definition matching to clarify vocabulary.

  • Dialogue activity highlighting hopes, wishes, intentions, and supportive responses.

  • Gap-fill practice to reinforce expressions in context.

  • Role-play speaking tasks where students share their own hopes, wishes, and plans.

  • Personal reflection linking the lesson to wellbeing and life goals.

Why is this lesson useful? By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  • Use varied expressions to describe future plans and ambitions.

  • Distinguish between similar words like hope, wish, intend, and plan.

  • Ask and answer supportive questions about other people’s intentions.

  • Apply the language to real-life wellbeing and personal development contexts.

Who is it for? This lesson is designed for A2–B1 adult learners, particularly those interested in self-improvement, wellbeing, and building supportive communication skills in English. It works well in both online and in-person classrooms.
