Asking for and Giving Personal Information

Lesson Description

What is this lesson about? This introductions ESL lesson plan is designed for pre-intermediate learners (A2–B1) who want to build confidence in asking for and sharing basic personal details. Students learn how to politely introduce themselves and ask about others using softeners (If you don’t mind me asking…), follow-up questions (Oh really? What’s that like?), and confirmation phrases (Let me see if I got that right…).

How do students learn the new language?

Learners move through a clear, practical sequence:

  • Warm-up discussion with simple personal background questions.

  • Dialogue analysis highlighting softeners, follow-ups, and confirmations.

  • Gap-fill activity to reinforce functional phrases.

  • Role-plays to practise exchanging introductions naturally.

  • Personal reflection with a short self-introduction task.

Why is this lesson useful?

By the end of the session, students can:

  • Introduce themselves politely and confidently.

  • Use softeners and follow-up questions to sound natural.

  • Confirm information to show interest and engagement.

  • Apply the language in everyday introductions with new people.

Who is it for?

This introductions ESL lesson plan is ideal for A2–B1 learners in small classes, one-to-one tutoring, or online lessons. It’s especially valuable for teachers who want students to practise real-world conversation skills from the very first session.
