Lesson Description

What is this lesson about? This giving instructions ESL lesson plan teaches A2–B1 learners how to use imperatives and sequencing language to give clear, step-by-step exercise instructions. Through dialogue analysis, controlled practice, and role-plays, students build confidence in guiding others with phrases like “First, stand with your feet shoulder-width apart,” “Keep your back straight,” and “Are you ready?”.

What language will students learn? Learners practise essential vocabulary (breathe, squat, knees, straight, position, hurt) and functional phrases for:

  • Imperatives: Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart.

  • Sequencing: First… Then… After that… Finally…

  • Checking understanding: Do you understand? / Are you ready?

How do students practise? The lesson develops fluency and accuracy through:

  • Warm-up discussion questions about exercise and instructions.

  • Vocabulary matching for fitness-related terms.

  • Dialogue activity highlighting imperatives, sequencing, and checks.

  • Gap-fill practice to reinforce correct use of instruction phrases.

  • Pronunciation focus on intonation for commands and yes/no questions.

  • Role-play speaking practice with trainer/trainee scenarios.

  • Personal reflection to apply the language to their own routines.

Why is this lesson useful? By the end, learners can:

  • Give and follow exercise instructions clearly.

  • Use imperatives and sequencing phrases naturally.

  • Check understanding politely and effectively.

  • Apply English to real-world health and wellness contexts.

Who is it for? This lesson is designed for A2–B1 adult learners. It’s especially useful for classes focused on health, fitness, and wellbeing, and works equally well online or in-person.
