A2-B1

FUNCTIONAL LANGUAGE

Lesson Description

What is this lesson about? This invitations ESL lesson plan helps A2–B1 learners practise making, accepting, and declining invitations with polite and natural phrasing. Students learn how to check availability, confirm details, and suggest alternatives through structured exercises and role-play practice.

What language will students learn? Learners explore five key terms—available, meet, arrange, plan, free—alongside a range of useful expressions such as:

  • Would you like to join me for…?

  • That sounds nice, but I’m afraid I can’t then.

  • Would … at … suit you?

  • Perhaps we can arrange for another day.

  • That sounds great. What time works for you?

How do students practise? The lesson develops fluency and accuracy through:

  • Warm-up discussion questions about invitations and social habits.

  • Vocabulary matching to introduce essential terms.

  • Dialogue activity highlighting acceptance, decline, and polite alternatives.

  • Gap-fill practice to reinforce expressions in context.

  • Role-play speaking tasks where students invite, accept, and decline naturally.

  • Personal reflection to connect the lesson to real-life situations.

Why is this lesson useful? By the end, learners can:

  • Accept and decline invitations politely in social and professional contexts.

  • Check details and suggest alternatives naturally.

  • Build confidence in managing everyday interactions in English.

  • Strengthen their ability to communicate with empathy and clarity.

Who is it for? This lesson is designed for A2–B1 adult learners, especially those interested in practical English for everyday communication and wellbeing-focused classes. It works well for both online and in-person sessions.
