What is this lesson about?
This preferences ESL lesson plan helps A2–B1 learners build confidence in expressing and asking about personal choices, especially in fitness contexts. Students practise language such as Do you prefer…?, I enjoy… more than…, and I’d rather… through dialogue, gap-fills, pronunciation work, and role-plays.
What language will students learn? Learners study useful vocabulary (gym, yoga, weights, spin class, run, prefer) and practise natural expressions for preferences, including:
Do you prefer… or …?
Would you rather… or …?
I’d rather…
I enjoy… more than…
I prefer… to…
To be honest, I’m not really into…
How do students practise? The lesson develops fluency step by step:
Warm-up discussion questions about fitness and lifestyle choices.
Vocabulary matching to introduce key words.
Dialogue activity highlighting preference expressions and softeners.
Gap-fill exercises to reinforce usage.
Pronunciation focus on intonation in preference statements and choice questions.
Role-play speaking practice using fitness-related scenarios.
Personal reflection where learners share their own preferences.
