Lesson Description
What is this lesson about?
This first second conditionals ESL lesson plan helps B1–B2 learners practise grammar structures for possibilities, advice, and hypothetical situations through the theme of health and wellbeing. Students explore how to talk about healthy habits, alternative lifestyles, and future consequences using meaningful, real-world contexts.
What language will students learn? Learners study two key conditional forms:
First conditional (real future situations): If I get more sleep, I’ll feel better. / If I eat more vegetables, my skin will look healthier.
Second conditional (imagined or unlikely situations): If I exercised regularly, I’d have more energy. / If I were you, I’d drink more water.
They also practise modal variations such as can, might, should, could, and must in conditional sentences.
How do students practise? The lesson builds accuracy and fluency through:
Warm-up discussion questions about lifestyle and wellbeing habits.
Gap-fill exercises to practise forming correct conditional sentences.
Sentence rewriting tasks to contrast first and second conditional usage.
Personalised speaking questions for diet, exercise, and mental health scenarios.
Creative writing tasks where students imagine healthier routines and outcomes.
Why is this lesson useful? By the end of the lesson, learners can:
Use first conditionals to describe possible future outcomes.
Use second conditionals to discuss imaginary or unlikely situations.
Apply grammar in practical wellbeing contexts (health, routines, lifestyle choices).
Build both fluency and accuracy while reflecting on personal habits.
Who is it for? This lesson is designed for intermediate adult learners (B1–B2). It’s ideal for wellbeing-focused ESL classes that want to combine grammar practice with real-world reflection and lifestyle improvement.
