Lesson Description

What is this lesson about? This wish and if only ESL lesson plan helps B1–B2 learners master the grammar of wish and if only while exploring themes of health, habits, and emotional wellbeing. Students practise expressing present desires, past regrets, and everyday annoyances through real-life wellness scenarios.

What language will students learn?Learners study three key structures:

  • Present desires (wish/if only + past simple): I wish I ate more vegetables.

  • Past regrets (wish/if only + past perfect): If only I hadn’t skipped breakfast.

  • Annoyances (wish + would/wouldn’t): I wish my neighbour wouldn’t smoke near my window.

How do students practise? The lesson develops accuracy and fluency step by step:

  • Warm-up discussion questions about health habits and lifestyle changes.

  • Gap-fill exercises to practise using the correct verb forms with wish and if only.

  • Sentence transformation tasks where learners rewrite scenarios using the target grammar.

  • Practice with expressing annoyance using wish + would/wouldn’t.

  • Speaking practice and reflection activities to personalise learning.

Why is this lesson useful? By the end, learners can:

  • Use wish and if only accurately to talk about health, wellbeing, and habits.

  • Express desires, regrets, and frustrations in a natural way.

  • Strengthen grammar skills while practising meaningful, real-world communication.

  • Reflect on their own lifestyle choices in English.

Who is it for? This lesson is designed for intermediate adult learners (B1–B2). It’s ideal for wellbeing-focused ESL classes and for learners who want to express themselves more naturally when talking about goals, regrets, and changes in their lives.
