COLLOCATIONS

Lesson Description

What is this lesson about? This travel collocations ESL lesson plan teaches B1–B2 learners eight key collocations to talk about planning and enjoying travel adventures. Students practise natural phrases like book accommodation, plan an itinerary, take a guided tour, and make memories through interactive activities and real-world speaking tasks.

What language will students learn? Learners focus on collocations that combine common verbs with travel-related nouns:

  • Book accommodation

  • Plan an itinerary

  • Catch a flight

  • Take a guided tour

  • Try local cuisine

  • Exchange currency

  • Make memories

  • Buy souvenirs

How do students practise? The lesson integrates vocabulary, grammar, and fluency through:

  • Warm-up discussion questions to spark travel conversation.

  • Definition and collocation matching to build word partnerships.

  • Sentence gap-fills and transformations for contextual practice.

  • Tense challenge to reinforce grammar accuracy.

  • Speaking activities where learners share their own travel habits and experiences.

Why is this lesson useful? By the end, learners will be able to:

  • Use authentic collocations to talk about booking, planning, and exploring.

  • Express travel experiences more naturally and fluently.

  • Strengthen grammar and vocabulary together in one lesson.

  • Personalise the language in meaningful conversations about past and future trips.

Who is it for? This lesson is designed for intermediate adult learners (B1–B2). It’s ideal for travel-focused discussions in online classes, in-person lessons, or independent study, giving students practical language they can immediately apply in real life.
