COLLOCATIONS

Lesson Description

What is this lesson about? This personal growth collocations ESL lesson plan helps B1–B2 learners build natural language for ambition, perseverance, and self-improvement. Students practise collocations such as set a goal, overcome obstacles, unlock your potential, and track your progress through matching, gap-fills, transformations, and reflective speaking tasks.

What language will students learn? Learners focus on eight essential collocations:

  • Set a goal

  • Overcome obstacles

  • Unlock your potential

  • Stay motivated

  • Track your progress

  • Visualise success

  • Develop self-discipline

  • Find your purpose

How do students practise? The lesson builds both vocabulary and confidence step by step:

  • Warm-up discussion questions about motivation and growth.

  • Definition and collocation matching to clarify meaning.

  • Sentence gap-fills and transformations for fluency and accuracy.

  • Tense challenge to reinforce grammar in context.

  • Speaking practice where learners reflect on personal experiences with growth and goals.

Why is this lesson useful? By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  • Use collocations to talk fluently about motivation and self-improvement.

  • Express goals, challenges, and achievements with confidence.

  • Strengthen grammar, vocabulary, and fluency in one integrated flow.

  • Apply real-world language to personal reflection and growth.

Who is it for? This lesson is designed for intermediate adult learners (B1–B2). It’s ideal for wellbeing-focused ESL classes and learners interested in personal development and reflective conversation.
