Lesson Description

What is this lesson about? This mindset idioms ESL lesson plan introduces six thought-provoking idioms to help B1–B2 learners express change, reflection, and flexibility of thought. Students learn expressions such as see the bigger picture, change your tune, food for thought, in two minds, a wake-up call, and see things in a new light through realistic dialogues, grammar tasks, and reflective speaking practice.

What language will students learn? Learners focus on six essential idioms:

  • See the bigger picture – understand the overall situation

  • Change your tune – change your opinion or behaviour

  • Food for thought – something that makes you think deeply

  • In two minds – to be unsure about a decision

  • A wake-up call – a moment that forces you to realise something important

  • See things in a new light – gain a different perspective

How do students practise? The lesson develops fluency and reflection through:

  • Warm-up discussion questions about decision-making and perspective.

  • Dialogue-based reading activity showing idioms in a real-life context.

  • Definition matching to clarify meanings.

  • Sentence transformations, gap-fills, and usage matching for natural application.

  • Speaking practice where learners reflect on their own mindset shifts and choices.
