IDIOMS

Lesson Description

What is this lesson about? This problems idioms ESL lesson plan helps B1–B2 learners talk about challenges, setbacks, and change using natural English idioms. Students learn expressions such as weather the storm, grin and bear it, face the music, a blessing in disguise, the final straw, and turn a corner through dialogue, grammar-based tasks, and reflective speaking activities.

What language will students learn? Learners focus on six essential idioms:

  • Weather the storm – survive a difficult time

  • Grin and bear it – tolerate something unpleasant without complaint

  • Face the music – accept the consequences of one’s actions

  • A blessing in disguise – something bad that later proves beneficial

  • The final straw – the last problem that makes a situation unbearable

  • Turn a corner – begin to improve after a difficult period

How do students practise? The lesson builds confidence and fluency through:

  • Warm-up discussion questions to connect idioms to personal experience.

  • Reading dialogue with authentic emotional context.

  • Definition matching to clarify idiom meanings.

  • Sentence transformations and gap-fills for flexible usage.

  • Typical usage matching to show idioms in real contexts.

  • Speaking practice where students reflect on setbacks, growth, and resilience.

Why is this lesson useful? By the end, learners can:

  • Use idioms naturally to talk about stress, setbacks, and recovery.

  • Share personal stories about overcoming difficulties.

  • Express resilience and optimism in authentic English.

  • Strengthen fluency by combining grammar, vocabulary, and storytelling.

Who is it for? This lesson is ideal for intermediate adult learners (B1–B2). It’s particularly suited for wellbeing-focused or personal growth ESL classes, whether online or in person.
