What is this lesson about?
This expressing feelings ESL lesson plan helps A2–B1 learners describe their emotions and respond empathetically in everyday conversations. Students practise simple but powerful expressions like I feel…, That sounds tough, and How about you? through dialogues, gap-fills, and role-plays.
What language will students learn? Learners focus on six core emotion words: tired, stressed, relaxed, anxious, excited, calm. They also master conversational structures for:
Expressing feelings: I feel tired today. / I’m feeling calm after my walk.
Responding empathetically: That sounds tough. / Hope you feel better soon.
Asking about others: How about you?
How do students practise? The lesson builds fluency and empathy step by step:
Warm-up discussion questions about feelings and situations.
Vocabulary matching for six emotion words.
Dialogue activity highlighting expressions and empathetic responses.
Gap-fill practice to reinforce natural usage.
Role-play speaking practice using different scenarios (e.g. before a job interview, after a long trip, before a fitness challenge).
Personal reflection to apply language to their own lives.
