Lesson Description

What is this lesson about? This giving advice ESL lesson plan helps A2–B1 learners practise polite and supportive ways of asking for and offering advice. Using real-life wellbeing contexts, students learn to describe stress, ask for suggestions, and give coping strategies confidently.

What language will students learn? Learners focus on six key terms: overwhelmed, cope, routine, mentor, support, technique. They also practise functional phrases for:

  • Describing challenges: I often feel overwhelmed when my workload increases. / I’m finding it hard to cope these days.

  • Asking for advice: What can I do when I feel like this? / Could you recommend ways to manage stress?

  • Giving advice: You could try breaking tasks into smaller steps. / One thing I’d recommend is reaching out for support from a friend or mentor.

How do students practise? The lesson develops empathy and fluency through:

  • Warm-up discussion questions on stress and coping strategies.

  • Vocabulary matching to clarify six essential terms.

  • Dialogue activity highlighting functional advice phrases.

  • Gap-fill practice to reinforce usage of advice structures.

  • Role-play speaking tasks where students practise giving and receiving advice with varied phrases.

  • Personal reflection to apply new language to real-life situations.

Why is this lesson useful? By the end, learners can:

  • Ask for and give advice using a variety of natural structures.

  • Build confidence in supportive and empathetic communication.

  • Apply functional English to wellbeing and stress-related scenarios.

  • Strengthen vocabulary, grammar, and fluency in one integrated lesson.

Who is it for? This lesson is designed for pre-intermediate adult learners (A2–B1). It’s particularly suited for wellbeing-focused ESL classes, providing practical and empathetic communication skills for everyday life.
