Let's Visit: Bali

What is this lesson about?
This Bali ESL lesson plan takes B1–B2 learners on a cultural and linguistic journey to Indonesia’s most famous island. Students build travel-related vocabulary, explore Balinese traditions, and practise natural speaking skills while learning why Bali is called the “Island of the Gods”.
 

What language will students learn?
Learners study:
 

• Travel vocabulary: temple, waterfall, terrace, sunrise hike, offering, street food

• Indonesian food terms: nasi goreng, mie goreng, satay lilit, babi guling, klepon, dadar gulung

• Cultural language: expressions for describing experiences (a feast for the senses, worth getting out of bed for, one for the memory bank)
   

How do students practise?
The lesson develops fluency and cultural knowledge through:
 

• Warm-up discussion questions about travel and island life.

• Quiz activity on Bali’s geography and culture.

• Video activity showing landscapes, temples, and traditions.

• Picture matching tasks for landmarks, foods, and cultural practices.

• Reading dialogue between travellers describing their trip.

• Comprehension and vocabulary questions based on the dialogue.

• Speaking practice and reflection where learners discuss their own travel preferences and memorable experiences.
