What is this lesson about?

This Wim Hof ESL lesson plan introduces B2–C1 learners to the science and mindset behind cold exposure and conscious breathing. Students build topic-specific vocabulary, develop listening and reading skills, and explore the link between focus, energy, and resilience through authentic content from Wim Hof’s teachings.

What language will students learn?

Learners study advanced health and science vocabulary such as resilience, vagus nerve, thermogenesis, hypoxia, endorphins, and immune system. They also explore idioms like break the ice, get cold feet, be on thin ice, the tip of the iceberg, and give someone the cold shoulder.

How do students practise?

Students build confidence and fluency through:

  • Discussion questions about challenge, mindset, and control.

  • Vocabulary matching and sentence completion tasks.

  • A reading activity explaining the Wim Hof Method.

  • A video task with comprehension and quote completion.

  • An idioms section linked to real-life experiences.

  • A “Complete the Sentence” speaking activity for natural conversation.

Why is this lesson useful?

By the end of the lesson, students can:

  • Talk naturally about cold exposure, breathing, and resilience.

  • Use idiomatic and scientific language with accuracy.

  • Strengthen their ability to explain cause, effect, and opinion.

  • Build fluency through structured, real-world speaking practice.

Who is it for?

Designed for upper-intermediate to advanced (B2–C1) adult learners, this lesson works perfectly for group or one-to-one classes focusing on lifestyle, personal growth, or health-related English. It’s ideal for teachers who want authentic, thought-provoking material that keeps learners engaged.
