What is this lesson about?

This B1–B2 learning ESL lesson plan explores the joy of learning as curiosity, personal growth, and identity — not exams or pressure. Using a short video, students reflect on how learning can change the way we see the world, and why many adults hesitate to learn new things.

What language will students practise?

Students practise natural, high-utility language for talking about learning beyond the classroom, including:

  • curiosity and motivation
  • hesitation and fear around learning
  • learning from mistakes
  • personal growth and experience
  • exploring new skills and interests

Key expressions include feed your curiosity, pursue knowledge, hesitate at the thought of, and gain experience.

How do students practise?

Students practise through:

  • reflective warm-up discussion
  • quote-based opinion tasks
  • video-led listening, prediction, and matching activities
  • vocabulary meaning, controlled practice, and speaking consolidation
  • guided personal reflection and choice-based discussion

All activities are conversation-first and designed for adult learners.

Why is this lesson useful?

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  • talk confidently about learning experiences and curiosity
  • express hesitation, motivation, and personal growth in English
  • reflect on how learning affects mindset and identity
  • take part in meaningful, real-world discussions about learning

Who is it for?

This lesson is designed for B1–B2 adult ESL learners.
It works especially well with professionals, lifelong learners, and students who enjoy reflective, wellbeing-focused topics rather than textbook skills lessons.
