What is this lesson about?

A speaking lesson exploring fear itself — why some people love horror films and Halloween scares while others avoid them completely. Halloween is used as a relatable, low-pressure route into a genuinely personal topic, with every activity built to get students talking.

What language will students learn?

Natural, everyday language for describing fear and reactions to it comes up organically as students react to quotes, choose between options, and respond to real-life situations, then gets put to genuine use in the final storytelling task.

How do students practise?

Learners build fluency through a conversation-first sequence:

  • Reacting to quotes about fear with a partner
  • Making forced choices in a this-or-that warm-up
  • Completing a personal self-assessment
  • Discussing what they would do in three realistic Halloween situations
  • Ranking scary things in small groups
  • Mingling to find classmates with specific experiences
  • Predicting a partner's answers before checking them
  • Discussing Halloween traditions and attitudes to fear
  • Telling a personal story about a time something scared them

Why is this lesson useful?

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  • Talk naturally about fear and reactions to it in everyday English
  • Give and justify an opinion on realistic, relatable situations
  • Take part in a genuine personal storytelling task
  • Discuss Halloween traditions and why people react differently to fear

Who is it for?

A2-B1 adult learners who want a genuinely conversational lesson with minimal reading and writing, and plenty of guided speaking practice.
