What is this lesson about?

This B2–C1 failure ESL lesson plan helps adult learners explore failure as part of learning and self-improvement, rather than a judgement of ability. Using a short video, students reflect on creativity, setbacks, unrealistic expectations, and how failure can lead to growth over time.

What language will students practise?

Students practise precise, natural language for talking about failure and progress, including:

  • responding to setbacks
  • separating self-worth from results
  • learning from mistakes
  • persistence and improvement
  • creative and professional failure

Key expressions include fall short of a goal, take a calculated risk, admit shortcomings, and gain experience.

How do students practise?

Students practise through:

  • belief-based warm-up discussion
  • quote interpretation and reflection
  • video-led listening, prediction, and matching tasks
  • vocabulary presentation, controlled practice, and speaking consolidation
  • structured discussion and personal reflection

All tasks are conversation-first and designed for adult learners.

Why is this lesson useful?

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  • discuss failure in a calm, nuanced way
  • express setbacks without negative self-judgement
  • reflect on learning through experience
  • take part in meaningful discussions about growth and improvement

Who is it for?

This lesson is designed for B2–C1 adult ESL learners.
It works especially well with professionals, creatives, long-term learners, and discussion-focused classes looking for thoughtful, real-world topics.
