What is this lesson about?

Delayed trains, slow wifi, the wrong order at a restaurant: everyone loves a good moan. This lesson gets B2-C1 learners talking about what annoys them, why moaning can feel so good, and whether it actually helps. Students react to everyday irritations, have a 1-minute moan while someone else hunts for the silver lining, decide what to do in awkward real-life situations.

What language will students learn?

Students use natural, informal British English for complaining, reacting, sympathising and looking on the bright side. The expressions come up through the speaking tasks rather than as a list to learn.

How do students practise?

●       Reacting to everyday irritations

●       Saying which moaning habits sound like them

●       Discussing moaning across cultures and why we do it

●       Having a 1-minute moan while someone finds the silver lining

●       Choosing between two options and explaining why

●       Deciding what to do in awkward real-life situations

●       Weighing up two viewpoints on whether moaning helps

●       Agreeing, disagreeing and partly agreeing with opinions

●       Telling a story about a time they finally complained

Why is this lesson useful?

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to…

●       use natural, informal expressions for complaining and reacting

●       sympathise with someone and offer a more positive view

●       tell an engaging story about a frustrating experience

Who is it for?

B2-C1 adult learners in one-to-one or group classes, online or in person. The instructions work equally well one-to-one and in groups, and the lesson needs no preparation beyond printing the worksheet.
