What is this lesson about?
Autumn gives students plenty to talk about: the weather, the food, the clothes, the dark evenings and the way our mood and routines change. This lesson uses all of it to get A2-B1 learners speaking from the first minute, through sensory sentences, quick opinions, a true-or-false quiz, and a plan for the perfect autumn day.
What language will students learn?
Students practise natural, everyday language for describing weather, food and feelings, giving opinions, asking follow-up questions, giving simple advice and making plans. The language comes up through speaking tasks.
How do students practise?
- Describing autumn through sounds, smells, tastes and feelings
- Rating everyday autumn things and comparing opinions
- Deciding whether surprising autumn facts are true or false
- Choosing five things to get through a long, wet weekend and defending their choices
- Guessing which of three autumn stories is made up
- Ranking the seasons and comparing rankings
- Talking about how food, sleep and routines change in autumn
- Planning the perfect autumn day together
- Speaking for 1 minute about an autumn topic
Who is it for?
A2-B1 adult learners in one-to-one or group classes. It needs no preparation beyond printing the worksheet. The instructions work equally well one-to-one and in groups.
