Lesson Description

What is this lesson about?

This B1-B2 vocabulary and speaking lesson explores remote and hybrid work, one of the biggest changes to modern working life. Students meet the language through a short, relatable account of a hybrid worker’s week, build a bank of current workplace expressions, then debate the pros and cons of different ways of working. The lesson closes with students choosing and justifying their own ideal working arrangement.

What language will students learn?

Students practise twelve current expressions for talking about remote and hybrid work, including:

Useful expressions

  • to work from home

  • hybrid working

  • a commute

  • flexible hours

  • to touch base

  • a stand-up

  • to loop someone in

  • Zoom fatigue

  • to feel isolated

  • work-life balance

  • to switch off

  • to blur the lines

These are introduced in three themed groups — ways of working, staying connected, and challenges — then tested with an odd-one-out task.

How do students practise?

Why is this lesson useful?

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  • Talk about remote and hybrid work using current, natural vocabulary

  • Discuss the pros and cons of different working arrangements

  • Express and justify a personal preference on how they work

  • Use workplace expressions like Zoom fatigue and work-life balance in context
