Lesson Description

What is this lesson about?

A  speaking lesson exploring boredom itself — whether we're engineering it out of our lives through constant stimulation, and what we might be losing in the process.

What language will students learn?

Sophisticated expressions for talking about attention, stimulation and idle time — including idioms like “to scratch an itch” and “patience wears thin” — are woven naturally into the quotes, scenarios and discussion, then put to genuine use in the final storytelling task.

How do students practise?

Learners build fluency through a conversation-first sequence:

  • Reacting to quotes about boredom and stimulation

  • Making forced choices in a this-or-that warm-up

  • Completing a personal self-assessment

  • Discussing what they would do in three realistic, screen-free situations

  • Ranking everyday moments by how quickly they'd reach for their phone

  • Debating two opposing viewpoints on boredom and modern life

  • Discussing whether boredom serves a genuine purpose

  • Telling a personal story about a time they were genuinely bored

Why is this lesson useful?

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  • Discuss attention, stimulation and boredom with genuine nuance

  • Take part in a structured debate and argue a position with reasoning

  • Use sophisticated, natural expressions absorbed through context rather than drilled in isolation

  • Take part in a genuine personal storytelling task

Who is it for?

C1-C2 adult learners who want a genuinely conversational lesson, built around a modern, relatable and slightly provocative question.
