SPEAKING
Lesson Description
What is this lesson about?
A speaking lesson exploring guilty pleasures — trashy TV, reality shows, the food you won't admit to loving — and the more interesting question underneath: why do we feel guilty about pleasure at all?
What language will students learn?
Natural, higher-level expressions for talking about guilt, image and indulgence — including idioms like ‘to brush something off’ and ‘caught red-handed’ — are woven into the quotes, scenarios and discussion.
How do students practise?
Learners build fluency through a conversation-first sequence:
Reacting to quotes about guilt and pleasure
Making forced choices in a this-or-that warm-up
Completing a personal self-assessment
Predicting a partner's guilty-pleasure answers before checking them
Discussing what they would do in three socially awkward situations
Ranking guilty pleasures by how judged they feel
Mingling to find classmates with specific habits and confessions
Debating two opposing viewpoints on guilt and pleasure
Discussing taste, class and social image
Confessing their own guilty pleasure to a partner
Why is this lesson useful?
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
Discuss guilt, taste and pleasure with genuine nuance
Take part in a structured debate and argue a position with reasoning
Use sophisticated, natural expressions absorbed through context
Take part in a genuine personal confession and storytelling task
Who is it for?
B2-C1 adult learners who want a genuinely conversational lesson, built around a fun, modern and slightly provocative question.
