B2-C1
VIDEO LESSON
Lesson Description
What is this lesson about?
This B2-C1 video ESL lesson looks at burnout before it becomes a crisis — the quieter, easy-to-miss signs rather than the dramatic ones. Learners watch a short explainer video outlining seven overlooked signs of burnout, then work through how these actually show up: cancelled plans, guilt around rest, quiet exhaustion at work. The lesson moves from personal self-assessment through comprehension and discussion into realistic scenarios, before students share a story of their own.
What language will students learn? Students practise expressions for describing stress, exhaustion and coping, including:
Useful expressions
burnout
to be emotionally exhausted
to isolate yourself
escape fantasies
your performance is suffering
a pessimistic mindset
to be on edge / irritable
to cope with stress
How do students practise? Learners build fluency through a watch-and-discuss sequence:
Reacting to statements about overwork and busyness culture
Reflecting on early personal signs of burnout
Learning key vocabulary before watching
Watching a video and checking comprehension
Discussing burnout and its place in modern work culture
Responding to realistic scenarios involving rest, guilt and boundaries
Agreeing or disagreeing with statements about burnout and who it affects
Sharing a personal story about a period of pressure
Reflecting on personal warning signs and one small change
Why is this lesson useful? By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
Discuss the signs and causes of burnout using natural, level-appropriate English
Use vocabulary for describing exhaustion, stress and coping strategies
Understand spoken English from an authentic-style explainer video
Respond to realistic workplace and personal scenarios involving pressure and boundaries
Reflect on personal wellbeing and share a related personal experience
Who is it for? This lesson is designed for adult ESL learners at B2-C1 level who want to build fluency around workplace stress, wellbeing and self-awareness through a video-based, discussion-led lesson.
