B1-B2
VOCABULARY & SPEAKING
Lesson Description
What is this lesson about?
This B1-B2 vocabulary and speaking lesson explores everyday anxiety — the ordinary worry and pressure of daily life, not a clinical discussion. Students build language for describing how anxiety feels, what triggers it, and how people cope, with a short speaking task built into every stage rather than saved for the end. The lesson closes with an extended paired conversation and a self-tracking checklist for the target expressions.
What language will students learn?
Students practise twelve expressions for talking about everyday anxiety, including:
Useful expressions
to feel on edge
a knot in your stomach
to overthink (something)
racing thoughts
a deadline looming
to dread (something)
the worst-case scenario
to be under pressure
to take a step back
to talk it through
to keep things in perspective
to let off steam
These are introduced in three themed groups — feelings, triggers and coping — each followed immediately by a speaking task.
How do students practise?
Learners build fluency through a present-and-practise sequence, repeated three times:
Reflecting on their own everyday experience of anxiety
Learning expressions for how anxiety feels, then speaking about it
Learning expressions for common triggers, then speaking about it
Learning expressions for coping strategies, then speaking about it
Sorting all twelve expressions into categories
Discussing anxiety and everyday pressure as a class
Agreeing or disagreeing with statements about anxiety and modern life
Holding an extended conversation and tracking their own use of the target language
Why is this lesson useful?
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
Describe everyday anxiety, its triggers, and how they cope with it
Use a wide range of natural expressions for feelings and pressure
Express nuanced opinions about anxiety and modern life
Sustain an extended conversation while actively using new vocabulary
Reflect on their own experience using precise, natural language
Who is it for?
This lesson is designed for adult ESL learners at B1-B2 level who want to talk about everyday stress and anxiety with more precision, through a lesson that builds in speaking practice at every stage rather than just at the end.
